2nd hand fabrics

Here are some photos of 2 pieces of patchwork I made over Christmas. All the fabrics are cut from clothes I bought from 2nd hand shops and are all cotton or linen.

I really enjoy putting such a range of patterns together and again have been interested in the use of white alongside colours. However although the white does lend some sense of space I think the intensity I always seem to end up with, in combining so many patterns, is as usual rather dense and the search for space is at best like trying to look through a bramble hedge or thicket!

In face thinking about it, it’s a bit like a description I made about the way I take photographs: I seem to build up a foreground that is very densely interwoven and whatever background there is is empty, and the sense of space is indeterminate and ambiguous. I think the way I’m using white in these pieces of textile work is a bit like when you look up at a tree and see the glimpses of sky through its branches, twigs and leaves, you get a sense not just of the colour of the sky but of the space and distance beyond the tree.
