The textile or quilt pieces are an exploration of pattern and process and also to an extent came out of my questioning ideas about functionality. The way they were made – how they were stitched, by hand or machine, and how evident the making process was in each piece – is central to the identity of each, but not the driving force. except maybe in the first piece “Dowry for the Unbetrothed” in which I was exploring the obsessive nature of repetitive process. Otherwise they are for me about putting shapes, colours, textures and degrees of translucency together in the same way that making a painting is. And they afforded me a way to make work on a larger scale than I could with a more rigid medium.
